New Year's Eve 2014

We rotate our NYE food, fun, and fanfare. Some years we do pizza. Some years we go out to eat. Some years we make food. This year we made food with an Asian flair. The photo features teriyaki beef, chicken curry, and rice. There are also some lil' smokies sausages because I associate them with New Years'. We rented a movie and watched it since it is hard to do too much with small children.

Tomorrow, we are going to a new Year's Day party with some people Brian and I had a class with over the summer. One of the curiosities about this university is that there is a lot of social drinking at all levels, not just the crazy undergrads. For instance, at the end of this semester, my professor took our class to a bar and paid for drinks during the time we would have had class. We also went to a party for my new supervisor at her house and they had to look around for several minutes to find water for us. While we were drinking it, about seven people tried to take it and get us to upgrade to something alcoholic. They were incredulous that we would not want to take advantage of an open bar.

So whenever we go to parties we have to vet whether we can bring Hannah and whether it will be the kind of place you can go to if other people are drinking alcohol and we aren't. Tomorrow's party is with a bunch of other non-drinkers, so all will be well.

So one time, when Jack was about 18 months old, we went out with Cody's TA group for dinner at an Irish pub. We didn't even think about it being a pub and walked in with our baby. The greeter at the door made sure we weren't planning on sitting right at the bar with him. They almost kicked us out. Then as we sat with the group, I was struggling to keep the toddler on my lap contented and Jack reached over and spilled Cody's professor's beer all over the table. Good times. :)

We also get fun looks whenever one of Cody's group graduates with a PhD. His professor always throws a party for the person and they toast at the end with champagne. She makes a point to get us water or juice and tries to not make a big deal about us drinking something different but it is super awkward.

Life outside BYU is interesting, especially when your have kids.

Wrapping up the Year (and Decade)

Christmas was nice. The weather was good and I was able to run like I usually do. I served a Thanksgiving Dinner because I spent Thanksgiving in Pennsylvania with my sister. The Year-Long January

The joke is that January is the longest month of the year. I thought it went quickly. Classes started and winter cold set in. We went to the eye doctor and Hannah waited for the doctor so long, she grew a beard.  Ultimately she decided on glasses that would make her look like Supergirl. I think she really pulled it off. All month I was on pins and needles about the government shutdown trying to decide if it was safe to fly to a conference. Luckily for me, the poor TSA workers and federal folks were able to get back to work. However, the planes I took (4 in all) were mostly empty and I got a row to myself. There was also a polar vortex that didn't help air travel looks appealing. I got there late at night and the room they had left was a large hotel suite. I took it. My colleague Michael Dunn and I divided our presentation up. We both did well. I also found a few good folks from Kansas. Then, I left Indy. When I wasn't worki...

Graduation and Mother's Day

It was my turn to help with activity night at church so I brought my graduation robes and so forth and let the little girls take turns all dressed up. Here of the pillow announcing Mother's Day.  As it turns out, there is an actual graduation song.     I went to convocation and read the names again.    Then, Mother's Day actually arrived. Here is my custom drawn picture.
