Hannahween 2016

This year for Hannah's birthday she had a sports party. We invited everyone in her preschool class. The kids dressed up in sports gear and we had a cake with baseballs, basketballs, footballs, and soccer balls on it.  The picture also features our sports plates.

I also gave the children who came cards with a bunch of activities and games like climbing, swinging, ring toss, soccer, baseball, and golf that they could try. The kids ran around playing the games and when they were done, I gave them gold medals.

Besides cake we also had a big sandwich and chips. After we ate, Hannah opened her presents.

I was sick and I think it shows in this picture.

On Hannah's actual birthday I came to her preschool class for part of the class. Hannah made everyone cookies and we had yogurt for them as well. They sang to her. I read stories with the kids during reading time and then it was time to go.

That night we went to Crown Center in Kansas City. This is where there is shopping, restaurants, and the Lego Discovery Center. We didn't go to the Center this time, but we did get a picture with a Lego friend.

For dinner, we ate at Fritz's. The kids get a conductor's hat and you order with a little black old fashioned phone. Then your order comes on a tray delivered by a train.

Outside the restaurant there is a train that is good for photo ops.

Before we left, I took Hannah to the small cakes cupcake store and let her pick a cupcake. I didn't make a separate cake because we still had leftover from the party. She picked a peanut better cup frosting with chocolate cake. I put one candle in at home and she blew it out. Then she opened her gifts. Both sets of grandparents, Aunts Lori, Jennifer, and Viri all sent her presents. I didn't buy her many things because we threw a party.

But I did get her this desktop easel. It has a dry erase board side, and a chalkboard side and magnets for attaching paper. She made our house with windows for each of the three bedrooms. The object between "I" and "Mom" is a candy corn because she noticed we didn't have any candy corns yet and it was nearly Halloween. The blue object is a hot tub because she wishes we had a hot tub.

It is really stressful to throw birthday parties because I sit and worry no one will come. And when people do come it is stressful to try to figure out things to say that are interesting but not controversial. I don't think I have the heart to do a party every year, but this was actually a good experience. I am grateful to everyone who came and everyone who sent Hannah presents or made her birthday wonderful in some way.

Wrapping up the Year (and Decade)

Christmas was nice. The weather was good and I was able to run like I usually do. I served a Thanksgiving Dinner because I spent Thanksgiving in Pennsylvania with my sister. The Year-Long January

The joke is that January is the longest month of the year. I thought it went quickly. Classes started and winter cold set in. We went to the eye doctor and Hannah waited for the doctor so long, she grew a beard.  Ultimately she decided on glasses that would make her look like Supergirl. I think she really pulled it off. All month I was on pins and needles about the government shutdown trying to decide if it was safe to fly to a conference. Luckily for me, the poor TSA workers and federal folks were able to get back to work. However, the planes I took (4 in all) were mostly empty and I got a row to myself. There was also a polar vortex that didn't help air travel looks appealing. I got there late at night and the room they had left was a large hotel suite. I took it. My colleague Michael Dunn and I divided our presentation up. We both did well. I also found a few good folks from Kansas. Then, I left Indy. When I wasn't worki...

Graduation and Mother's Day

It was my turn to help with activity night at church so I brought my graduation robes and so forth and let the little girls take turns all dressed up. Here of the pillow announcing Mother's Day.  As it turns out, there is an actual graduation song.     I went to convocation and read the names again.    Then, Mother's Day actually arrived. Here is my custom drawn picture.
