New Life in ABQ

Since my last post on June 18, a lot of stuff has happened. Some of the highlights:

 1. We went to McDonalds a lot. Hannah was able to get every minion toy they had during the month of July.

2. We went to the beach and Hannah discovered the joy of irony. No fishing in the marina? Then what are all those fishing boats for?

3. We also played in the sand. Hannah liked writing with sticks. She didn't seem to mind the colder beach so much.

4. She also discovered the joys of sunbathing.

5. In Monterey they had a wonderful Salvador Dali exhibit. I guess Dali liked Monterey and spent lots of time there and so it was easy to get a collection. Hannah really enjoyed the art, being a trained artist herself from the Lawrence Arts Center Preschool.

6. We did lots of academic work at libraries such as the John Steinbeck library in Salinas. It was a place where lots of transient people came to work. Being homeless ourselves, we fit right in.

 7. Academic work also mean academic travel. I was in Kansas, Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, Oklahoma (three times), Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Virginia, Washington DC, and Utah I usually don't pictures when I am by myself. But above is George Washington's farm at Mt. Vernon.

 8. And here is the Mt. Vernon estate itself. Very pretty grounds. Right on the Potomac river.

9. A shot of the street I ran up and down while in California. The Palm Trees make me happy.

10. The sale of the house finalized. Here we are after signing the papers.

11. Then I went to see my brother's baby girl in Utah and visited my parents.

12. Hannah made friends with this kid at the park diving a mini-Mercedes. Within a few minutes she was driving the car. Within a few more minutes the original owner was out of the car and Hannah was giving a ride to a different kid. Reminded me of a lot of 80s movies with Molly Ringwald. Man-o-man.

13. All of our stuff finally got to New Mexico. Thank you to good friends for letting our stuff sit in your yard and garage for two and half months.

14. I had a birthday. We went to Sweet Tomatoes: The Salad Buffet the day before because I taught on my actual birthday.

15. We hiked the petroglyphs at the national monument. It didn't take too long and Hannah was a trooper.

16. We have mastered the art of walking to school in the morning. We know exactly when to leave to arrive by the first bell.

17. We are not even distracted by the hot air balloons as they float over our house. There is usually at least 1, but often times there are as many as 10 in our easy view.

18. We are exploring new stuff. This is a dessert shop with a  patio. I went to a baby shower here.

19. My office got my name on it. I like seeing "Mary Rice, PhD" on the door and next to it, "Professor of Literacy." Believe me. I do profess.

Wrapping up the Year (and Decade)

Christmas was nice. The weather was good and I was able to run like I usually do. I served a Thanksgiving Dinner because I spent Thanksgiving in Pennsylvania with my sister. The Year-Long January

The joke is that January is the longest month of the year. I thought it went quickly. Classes started and winter cold set in. We went to the eye doctor and Hannah waited for the doctor so long, she grew a beard.  Ultimately she decided on glasses that would make her look like Supergirl. I think she really pulled it off. All month I was on pins and needles about the government shutdown trying to decide if it was safe to fly to a conference. Luckily for me, the poor TSA workers and federal folks were able to get back to work. However, the planes I took (4 in all) were mostly empty and I got a row to myself. There was also a polar vortex that didn't help air travel looks appealing. I got there late at night and the room they had left was a large hotel suite. I took it. My colleague Michael Dunn and I divided our presentation up. We both did well. I also found a few good folks from Kansas. Then, I left Indy. When I wasn't worki...

Graduation and Mother's Day

It was my turn to help with activity night at church so I brought my graduation robes and so forth and let the little girls take turns all dressed up. Here of the pillow announcing Mother's Day.  As it turns out, there is an actual graduation song.     I went to convocation and read the names again.    Then, Mother's Day actually arrived. Here is my custom drawn picture.
