Academic Work in San Francisco

While Brian and I presented, Brian's parents hung out with her San Francisco.  She knows them very well because they stayed with us for almost a year when she was born and they Skype with her at least once a day. Still, when we arrived on the plane, it took Hannah a minute to realize who they were. After that minute, she and her grandmother were fast friends.

My mother-in-law loves Macy's department store, and honestly, so do I. There is usually a really upscale Macy's in the places we go for conferences and San Francisco was no exception. Hannah and grandmommy went there to kill time during one of the presentations.

Hannah wanted to run and play everywhere she went.  She also likes necklaces.  She broke a few of mine and so we got her some of her own that were much cheaper. She also likes to have her toenails painted, her feet rubbed with lotion, and her hair brushed. Who doesn't?

On the far left is Dr. Hamilton who is Brian and my doctoral academic adviser.  She also loves Hannah and Hannah loves her. Hannah calls her grandma and we let her because it seems pretentious to make her call her "Dr. Hamilton." The next person is Dr. Pinnegar, who was my master's thesis adviser at BYU. She loves Hannah as well and supplements her wardrobe extensively.  When Hannah was a little baby, I used to give her Dr. Pinnegar so I could go present and so she is always worried that when Dr. Pinnegar is around I am going to leave her. The next person is Dr. Murphy.  He is a professor in Canada and we know him through the Self-Study of Practice academic community. When he found out I was pregnant with Hannah, he went out and bought her a little onesie with a Moose on it. He is a math teacher educator and so it is fitting that he also gave Hannah her first counting book. Together, we gave a presentation on some research we did collectively.

Here I am giving my speech at the conference. I was late because I got my shoe caught in the street where the cable runs by for the trolley but people were understanding and the talk went well.

The Year-Long January

The joke is that January is the longest month of the year. I thought it went quickly. Classes started and winter cold set in. We went to the eye doctor and Hannah waited for the doctor so long, she grew a beard.  Ultimately she decided on glasses that would make her look like Supergirl. I think she really pulled it off. All month I was on pins and needles about the government shutdown trying to decide if it was safe to fly to a conference. Luckily for me, the poor TSA workers and federal folks were able to get back to work. However, the planes I took (4 in all) were mostly empty and I got a row to myself. There was also a polar vortex that didn't help air travel looks appealing. I got there late at night and the room they had left was a large hotel suite. I took it. My colleague Michael Dunn and I divided our presentation up. We both did well. I also found a few good folks from Kansas. Then, I left Indy. When I wasn't worki...

Bygone April

We decorated for Easter in April. Low key, but cute. Hannah helped make some of them. She even did this painting of the eggs.   And the ceramic ornament in the little house. After Easter I went to Toronto for AERA.   After AERA Easter came. We went to the annual Easter egg hunt.  And colored our own eggs.  And went to church. At the end of the month, we visited my parents in Utah, traveling by plane. It was sunny one of the days and cloudy and rainy the rest, but the visit was nice.  And that was April.
