Fall Break in Nebraska

I never get a break on Fall Break, so this year I just packed a bag and left town. There were still things for me to do at work and I got them all done, but I didn't go in to work. 

This year we went to Nebraska. Here is Hannah in the Kanesville Tabernacle, the place where Brigham Young was sustained as the second prophet in front of 800 people. I have no idea how they got 800 people in the building.  


We also went to the visitor's center at winter quarters. Here are some journal excerpts--one of the writers is a relative.


Here is the cane that Brigham Young stamped into the group to declare where the Salt Lake Temple would be. A lot of people don't realize that after he got to the Salt Lake Valley, he organized some things and then headed back to Nebraska. Hence, his cane is in Florence/Winter Quarters.

Here is the cemetery. There are a lot of people here, but most graves are unmarked. There is a little map that you can get to see where your ancestors might be.


As we calculated here is where Willard Richards Bullock is buried. Hannah is standing on the spot.

And here are the gates. I like how they look inviting instead of like scary cemetery gates. The rest of the long weekend I cleaned data for analysis, finished a paper with a graduate student, revised a paper in press for layout, revised a paper for a second review for publication, cooked homemade chili, made apple pie, babysat my friend's child, and went to a movie. The rest of this week, I still need to finish a project for a grant where I am a principal investigator, teach a class on library research, plan two business trips in November (plane, hotel, registration), and oversee the methodology of a center project. I am also going to mentor 20 Chinese students and visit a pumpkin patch with the preschoolers. I need to figure out how to do less stuff.

WOW...Loved this post. I love them all. I don't always get a chance to comment but I look everyday to see if there is anything new. I would love to go to Winter Qtrs and surrounding are sometime. Looks like Hannah enjoyed herself. I can really see her as a little pioneer child. Grandpa said she just fit in really well in that first picture. She just blended in great. Looks like she was really there. Interesting story about Brigham's can too. I didn't know that about him. I also appreciated the info regarding the cemetery and our ancestors. You can't be that close to these things and not go see them. You are so busy. I don't know how you do it.!

The Year-Long January

The joke is that January is the longest month of the year. I thought it went quickly. Classes started and winter cold set in. We went to the eye doctor and Hannah waited for the doctor so long, she grew a beard.  Ultimately she decided on glasses that would make her look like Supergirl. I think she really pulled it off. All month I was on pins and needles about the government shutdown trying to decide if it was safe to fly to a conference. Luckily for me, the poor TSA workers and federal folks were able to get back to work. However, the planes I took (4 in all) were mostly empty and I got a row to myself. There was also a polar vortex that didn't help air travel looks appealing. I got there late at night and the room they had left was a large hotel suite. I took it. Wrapping up the Year (and Decade)

Christmas was nice. The weather was good and I was able to run like I usually do. I served a Thanksgiving Dinner because I spent Thanksgiving in Pennsylvania with my sister. It has been a busy decade. I only have two years where something major didn't happen. On to 2020. My list of Big stuff for the last decade. 2010—Finished Master’s degree 2011—Published Master’s degree as book 2011—Daughter born 2012—Book won award 2013—Moved to KS for PhD program (January) 2014— 2015—Published second book 2016—Finished PhD program (August) 2017—Moved to Albuquerque for faculty position 2018— 2019—Submitted mid-probationary dossier

Bygone April

 We decorated for Easter in April. Low key, but cute. Hannah helped make some of them. She even did this painting of the eggs.   And the ceramic ornament in the little house. After Easter I went to Toronto for AERA.   After AERA Easter came. We went to the annual Easter egg hunt.  And colored our own eggs.  And went to church. At the end of the month, we visited my parents in Utah, traveling by plane. It was sunny one of the days and cloudy and rainy the rest, but the visit was nice.  And that was April.
